About IceRide
Iceland is one of the most breathtaking places on earth to explore, but getting around it has always been harder than it should be. Buses are infrequent and expensive. Rental cars cost €80 a day before insurance and fuel. Organised tours run on someone else's schedule.
And yet every single day, thousands of cars drive up the Ring Road, east to the fjords, north to Akureyri, with empty seats.
IceRide exists to fix that.
What we do
IceRide connects drivers who have spare seats with travellers who need a ride, to anywhere in Iceland. Whether you're trying to get from Keflavík Airport to your hostel in Reykjavík, or from the capital all the way to Seyðisfjörður in the East Fjords, IceRide helps you find someone already heading that way.
It's cheaper than renting a car. It's more flexible than a bus. And it's a better way to see Iceland, with a local or a fellow traveller who knows the road.
Our values
Free, always.
Posting and finding rides on IceRide is completely free. No booking fees, no commissions, no hidden charges. Drivers and passengers agree on cost sharing privately and we just help them find each other.
Built for tourists.
Iceland's place names are notoriously difficult to spell. Its roads are unlike anywhere else in the world. IceRide is designed specifically for people exploring Iceland, in English, with landmarks as destinations, not just town names.
Community over profit.
IceRide was inspired by Samferða.is, a free carpooling board that Icelanders have used since 2005. That spirit of community and mutual help is at the heart of everything we build.
Better for the environment.
Every shared ride means one fewer rental car on the Ring Road. Iceland's landscapes are extraordinary and carpooling is a small but meaningful way to protect them.
The story
IceRide was built by an Icelander who got frustrated watching tourists struggle with a problem that had a simple solution. The technology to connect people has existed for years. All it needed was someone to build it properly, in a way that actually worked for the people who needed it most.
We're just getting started. If you have feedback, ideas, or want to get involved, we'd love to hear from you.
